Senior Citizen Card is an Identity card issued by government to the 60 years and above 60 years citizens.
This is an additional ID card for old age citizens along with AADHAR Number, PAN Card and Voter ID
The main aim or purpose of Senior Citizen Card is the 60 years above citizens to provide various documents to prove their age to avail senior citizens benefits.
What is the Senior Citizen Card?
The Senior Citizen Card is issued to individuals aged 60 years and above. This card simplifies enrollment in government welfare schemes. It replaces the need to show Aadhaar or other government-issued cards to avail benefits.
Any person can apply for the card by paying a nominal fee of ₹10 and submitting proof of identity, residence, and age through application forms available on state government websites or state “service centers.”
Punjab provides the card free of cost for individuals aged 60 years or above.

High Interest Rates
Senior citizens can benefit from elevated interest rates on fixed deposits with a Senior Citizen Bank Savings Deposit. Typically, banks and post office provide an additional interest rate of 0.50% for senior citizens and up to 1.00% for super senior citizens (80 years and above). The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) at the post office guarantees a high-interest rate of 8.2% for senior citizens.
Tax Benefits
Senior citizens receive higher tax exemptions than regular taxpayers under the old tax regime. The basic income tax exemption limit is ₹3 lakh for senior citizens and ₹5 lakh for super senior citizens. For individuals below 60 years, it’s ₹2.5 lakh. However, under the new tax regime, the exemption limit is the same for all individuals those below 60 years, senior citizens, and super senior citizens.
Travel Discounts
Although Indian Railways has suspended ticket discounts for senior citizens after COVID-19, some state governments offer discounts on bus travel. Similarly, many airlines provide discounts on tickets.
Healthcare Benefits
Government hospitals offer discounts to senior citizens who can easily avail themselves of the benefits by showing their Senior Citizen Card.
Other Benefits
Homeless senior citizens or those without financial resources can benefit from Vridhashram services by presenting their card. They can also request expedited hearings for legal matters. This card is valid nationwide for availing government benefits.
